To many who join a martial arts club, the black belt is that ultimate goal to strive for. From the moment we tie on a white belt, we strive to learn all the required material and techniques to achieve the next rank. We keep adding on to our education and accumulating higher and higher ranks. Then the fateful day arrives and we test for black belt. What a special day! But what happens after that day passes?I've had my black belt for a little over a year, now. I know a lot of techniques, but I haven't perfected any of them. I know the teachings of judo, but I don't truly understand. Shortly after I received my black belt, a higher ranking gentleman congratulated me and added, "Now you can really start learning." That may be a depressing thought for someone who had been working for years to achieve such a goal, but I rather think it is exhilarating knowing that the journey continues. It's nice to know after all these years of enjoyment and growth, I'm closer to the beginning than the end.

One of my good friends is a black belt and told me the same thing...that the learning of the skills comes before the teaching of the mind. Good luck.
